Cloudflare has unveiled Cloudflare Wallets, a programmable wallet product designed to enable AI agents to make payments and establish verifiable identity within web services. The product addresses a key friction point: AI agents currently struggle to access APIs because they lack both a stable identifier for signup and a native payment mechanism, forcing many to defer onboarding and payment tasks back to human operators. Cloudflare's announcement introduces two wallet types—Account Wallets for human users and Virtual Wallets for agents—allowing agents to purchase APIs, content, and services via micropayments attached to HTTP requests using the x402 protocol.
Virtual Wallets operate through API keys and enable agents to spend within limits set by the human account owner, creating guardrails such as spending allowances, allow lists, and maximum transaction sizes. This structure permits agents to explore and test multiple services with reduced friction while keeping spending under human control. Account Wallets, meanwhile, allow users to add and withdraw funds, delegate spending to virtual wallets, and share their Cloudflare Wallet handle as a stable merchant identity.
The product integrates with Cloudflare's recently announced Monetization Gateway, which enables customers to sell APIs and content through x402-compatible endpoints. However, details remain limited on wallet implementation timelines, supported stablecoins, transaction fees, and integration requirements for third-party x402 endpoints beyond Cloudflare's own infrastructure.
