Base founder steps back from social push, targets finance stack

Jesse Pollak says Base will center 2026 plans on trading, stablecoin payments and AI agents after conceding the network's social-product bet fell short.
Base founder Jesse Pollak has reversed course on the network's strategic direction, stepping back from leadership of the Base App and returning his attention to the underlying Base blockchain. Pollak said the earlier emphasis on social products and content coins was a misjudgment, one that left Base trailing competitors in perpetuals, prediction markets, tokenization and payments, according to wublockchain.xyz.
Control of the Base App has passed to Coinbase, with Cobie now leading its product development, a change also confirmed by theblock.co. Pollak's own account of the shift, framing the social strategy as underperforming, appears in a post on x.com.
The rationale behind the pivot is that broader crypto adoption does not depend on social features, but can instead be pushed forward through financial tools — stablecoins, prediction markets, perpetuals and tokenization chief among them. Pollak has framed his own role going forward as building Base into infrastructure for global finance rather than a consumer social layer, a characterization echoed in coverage from decrypt.co.
For 2026, Pollak outlined three areas of focus: widening trading access across asset types, including tokenized stocks and app-linked coins; strengthening global stablecoin payment rails; and enabling AI agents to transact using crypto-native payment methods. The framing positions Base's roadmap around financial infrastructure rather than the content- and social-driven features it had pursued previously.
The change in direction is corroborated across multiple outlets covering the leadership handoff, with four distinct sources describing the same shift away from social bets and toward Cobie's stewardship of the consumer app. What remains unclear is how quickly the reoriented priorities — trading expansion, payments infrastructure and agent support — will translate into shipped products, and whether Coinbase's management of the Base App under Cobie will diverge from Pollak's earlier social-first approach.
