Vana acquires Memory Protocol team and launches beta personal server app with MCP-based portable memory.
AI & Agents ·
Vana has acquired the Memory Protocol team and launched a beta version of its Personal Server app, a local data repository that users control on their own devices. Jack Spallone, from the Memory Protocol team, has joined Vana to lead work on portable memory infrastructure. The Personal Server integrates with Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing users to share their stored context—such as calendar data, listening history, and conversations—across multiple AI tools and applications without recreating context each time they switch platforms.
The upgrade addresses a structural problem in AI adoption: major platforms including OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google have each launched memory features in early 2026, but these remain isolated on each company's servers. Vana's approach stores user data locally and exposes it via an MCP endpoint, enabling Claude, ChatGPT, and any MCP-compliant tool to read from a single owned source. Users grant or revoke permissions directly without platform intermediaries.
The beta is accessible at app.vana.org, with Vana also releasing documentation and builder workshops for developers integrating the Data Portability API into their applications. It remains unclear how rapidly adoption will scale or whether mainstream AI platforms will prioritize MCP compatibility for memory features in production.
