Recent events illustrate the escalating arms race. Researchers used Claude Opus 4.8 to surface a dormant Zcash vulnerability in May; July brought reports of AI uncovering Ethereum infrastructure weaknesses and enabling the Coldcard wallet hack that drained roughly $130 million in Bitcoin; by August, Bitcoin Red Team audits flagged thousands of potential flaws across hundreds of projects. Whether defensive AI capabilities can outpace offensive ones remains unsettled, though Buterin asserts such parity is achievable and necessary for blockchain viability.
