$6.4B in Bitcoin options expire on Derimart Friday, with max pain positioned well below current BTC price.
DeFi & Yields ·
Bitcoin options contracts totaling $6.44 billion are set to expire Friday on Deribit, encompassing 81,700 contracts split between 44,639 calls and 37,061 puts. This expiry represents nearly one-fifth of the exchange's Bitcoin open interest. According to reporting, the settlement coincides with a significant gap between current Bitcoin pricing near $79,000 and the computed max pain level of $68,000 to $70,000—a difference of roughly $9,000 to $11,000.
The mechanics of large options expirations can influence market movement through hedging activity. Firms holding short positions in these contracts must adjust their Bitcoin holdings as prices shift, creating potential trading flow independent of news or broader sentiment. The current batch leans toward calls, with a put-to-call ratio of 0.83, and the heaviest concentrations of open interest sit at the $75,000 and $80,000 strikes, where more than $500 million in notional value is positioned.
Whether this expiry will exert meaningful pressure on Bitcoin's price remains uncertain. The wide spread between spot price and max pain could intensify hedging activity, though roughly 62 percent of Friday's contracts are projected to expire worthless. Market observers note that expiry events routinely generate outsized concern relative to their actual impact.
