BIS Project Agorá completes $1M cross-border tokenized payment test across six currencies with 80-second settlement times.

Project Agorá, led by the Bank for International Settlements, has finished a live test moving roughly $1 million across borders using tokenized reserves and deposits. The exercise involved five central banks and 28 commercial banks—among them JPMorgan Chase, Citigroup, UBS, Deutsche Bank, and Standard Chartered—and spanned six currency pairs: USD, EUR, GBP, JPY, CHF, and KRW. Transactions settled in an average of 80 seconds via a shared ledger structure that let participants record all activity on a single record.
The test applied synchronized foreign exchange mechanics to reduce counterparty exposure during the swap phase. This represents one approach within a broader set of wholesale tokenization initiatives examining how distributed ledger systems might reshape settlement infrastructure at scale.
The exercise confirms technical viability at a modest transaction volume, but questions remain about economic viability, regulatory pathway, and whether institutions will migrate material transaction flows to such systems once pilots expand beyond proof-of-concept phases.
