CFTC approves stock perpetuals trading but faces legal challenge the same day; pro-crypto spending efforts largely unsuccessful in recent elections.

The CFTC approved equity perpetual futures for trading on U.S. exchanges on Tuesday, classifying them as security futures products under joint CFTC and SEC oversight, but faced an immediate legal challenge filed the same day by the Capital Markets Alliance, which argues the products are securities-based swaps belonging to the SEC's jurisdiction and that the agency violated the Administrative Procedure Act. Seven entities currently hold the dual registrations needed to offer these products, with Kalshi expected to launch within days and Coinbase having filed to list perpetuals on Apple, Tesla, and Nvidia. Separately, pro-crypto campaign spending of $64 million failed to prevent the defeat of several pro-crypto candidates in recent elections, including a campaign against Senator Sherrod Brown.
