Circle positions USDC as core infrastructure for AI agent payments and the emerging agentic economy.

Circle is positioning USDC as the settlement asset for AI agent transactions, claiming it handles 98.6% of agent-initiated payments according to a joint study. The company frames agentic payments as part of a broader shift toward software agents functioning as economic participants—requiring not just payment rails but also identity management, authorization controls, audit trails, and accountability mechanisms. Multiple industry standards have emerged to enable this infrastructure, including protocols from Anthropic, OpenAI, Google, and others, while major payment networks and financial institutions including JPMorgan Payments, Mastercard, and Visa have begun positioning themselves.
Current on-chain volumes remain minimal relative to the scale of traditional finance or existing stablecoin activity. Public dashboards tracking Machine Payments Protocol transactions show approximately $240,000 in total volume across roughly 1.7 million transactions as of July 2026, while other protocol implementations report daily volumes in the tens of thousands of dollars. Most transactions involve amounts under 30 cents and stem from ecosystem testing rather than production use.
Institutional adoption depends on resolving several operational constraints—including identity verification, delegation frameworks, policy enforcement, audit capabilities, and transaction reversibility—before large-scale volumes materialize. Whether these infrastructure gaps will be closed and on what timeline remains unclear.
