Circle investor files emoluments lawsuit against Trump, World Liberty
DeFi & Yields ·
A shareholder in Circle has brought a constitutional challenge against President Donald Trump and World Liberty Financial over two large UAE-linked transactions.
The complaint centers on the Foreign Emoluments Clause and names two deals: a $500 million sale of a 49% ownership position in World Liberty, and a separate $2 billion investment in Binance that was financed through World Liberty's USD1 stablecoin, according to reporting citing Bloomberg. The plaintiff argues these transactions amounted to improper financial benefit flowing from foreign dealings tied to Trump's position.
At the core of the filing is an argument about market harm. The shareholder contends that the arrangements gave World Liberty and its stablecoin an unfair edge over competitors, with Circle investors bearing the cost of that distortion. The suit asks courts to force disgorgement of profits generated by the deals and to award damages tied to the alleged injury.
Both named entities facing scrutiny have pushed back in different ways. Circle has stated it has no connection to the litigation and is not a party driving the claims, distancing the company itself from the shareholder action even though the suit is framed around harm to its investors. World Liberty, meanwhile, has rejected the allegations outright, disputing that the transactions violated any constitutional restriction.
The dispute adds legal exposure to a set of deals that already drew attention for their scale and structure, including the use of a dollar-pegged stablecoin to fund a multibillion-dollar position in Binance. Coverage of the case has circulated across at least two distinct sources, pointing to broader interest in how courts might treat presidential involvement in foreign-linked crypto transactions.
Unresolved for now is whether the emoluments claim will survive early motions, how a court might value any "illegal profits" subject to disgorgement, and whether Circle will face any obligation to participate further despite its stated distance from the case. The response, if any, from Trump or his representatives has not been detailed in current reporting.
