A CryptoQuant analyst attributed Bitcoin's weekly rally primarily to concentrated short liquidations on Binance futures rather than underlying spot market demand. Binance's Short Squeeze indicator climbed to 6.94, marking its highest level since November 2024. The analyst noted that forced buying from closing short positions fueled much of the move.
The mechanics center on the dynamics of leveraged liquidations. As short positions unwind en masse, buy orders are triggered automatically, creating upward price momentum that may not reflect organic spot purchasing. This distinguishes between rally strength driven by speculators being forced to cover and rally strength rooted in actual demand from spot buyers.
A key risk identified is sustainability. If spot demand does not materialize once the squeeze dissipates, Bitcoin faces pullback pressure, leaving the durability of the current move unclear without additional spot-market participation.
