The European Central Bank has selected 36 payment providers to take part in a year-long trial of the digital euro, with testing set to begin in the second half of 2027.
The pilot marks a concrete step in a project the ECB has cast as central to keeping the euro relevant as money moves increasingly on-chain, according to the ECB source. Corroborating coverage of the same announcement describes the 36 participants as major banks brought in to test the central bank digital currency ahead of a broader rollout.
The digital euro itself is designed as a retail CBDC โ a direct claim on the Eurosystem rather than on a commercial bank, redeemable at par into cash and intended to function as a free, digital counterpart to banknotes. Consumers would access it through wallets and apps run by banks and regulated payment firms, with the ECB also planning a fallback app of its own so users can switch providers without losing continuity of service.
The 2027 pilot sits inside a longer timeline that has been building for months. In April, the ECB partnered with ECPC, Nexo, and the Berlin Group to reuse existing open payment standards, a move meant to cut integration costs before the pilot and ahead of a targeted 2029 rollout. In June, Members of the European Parliament advanced the digital euro legislation in a 43-14 vote that included zero-knowledge privacy provisions and caps on how much individuals could hold.
The project has not been free of friction. ECB board member Isabel Schnabel has argued the digital euro is necessary to blunt risks from dollar-backed stablecoins, warning that their growth could deepen U.S. monetary dominance over Europe. Critics have pushed back from the other direction, arguing the euro CBDC as currently designed is too politically constrained and bank-protective to compete with more open, commercially driven dollar stablecoins.
What remains unsettled is how the holding caps, privacy safeguards, and provider integration standards will actually perform once the 36 selected firms begin live testing, and whether the results keep the project on track for the 2029 launch target that policymakers have set.
