The bank has named its forthcoming Hong Kong-dollar stablecoin HSBC RedCoin, pairing the reveal with customer survey data on digital-asset readiness.
HSBC confirmed the branding for its planned stablecoin on 30 September 2026, according to an announcement posted by the bank about.hsbc.com.hk. The bank has not yet issued any stablecoins in Hong Kong, and the naming marks a step toward a planned second-half launch of the HKD-denominated token, per the same release.
The disclosure was accompanied by results from a poll of more than 1,000 local customers, which found that 74 per cent could identify at least one practical stablecoin application. Digital asset trading and tokenised investments ranked highest at 57 per cent, trailed by person-to-person transfers at 53 per cent, cross-border remittances at 52 per cent, and merchant payments also at 52 per cent. Sixty per cent of respondents correctly described a stablecoin as backed by fiat currency, though 26 per cent mistakenly believed such tokens are government-issued and 10 per cent thought they carry interest โ a feature absent from Hong Kong's present regulatory setup.
Maggie Ng, Chief Executive Officer for Hong Kong and Head of Retail Banking and Wealth at HSBC, said the RedCoin name was chosen to reflect the bank's heritage, framing the launch as an early step rather than a finished product. She described the coin as a logical progression for a customer base already engaged with digital assets, rather than an experimental venture.
Survey participants also flagged conditions for building trust: 53 per cent wanted stronger fraud protection, 51 per cent sought easy conversion back to cash, and 39 per cent asked for clearer visibility into reserves backing the token. Regulatory clarity was the top confidence driver at 62 per cent, followed by better public education at 55 per cent. HSBC said it will roll out the coin in phases, starting with everyday peer-to-peer and merchant payment use before extending to wholesale corporate and institutional applications, alongside an educational push on its apps, website, and social channels covering scam prevention and redemption processes. The move was also flagged by wublockchain.xyz.
Still open is the precise launch date for the HKD-denominated stablecoin, how HSBC will address the regulatory-clarity gap customers cited, and how the phased expansion into institutional use will unfold within Hong Kong's evolving digital-asset framework.
