HSBC unveiled HSBC RedCoin as the official name for its forthcoming Hong Kong stablecoin on 30 September 2026. The bank's leadership framed the launch as a step toward supporting financial innovation in the territory, grounded in trust and security. A survey of over 1,000 local customers showed 74 per cent identified at least one stablecoin use case, with digital asset trading and tokenised investments leading at 57 per cent, followed by peer-to-peer transfers, cross-border remittances, and merchant payments each at roughly half of respondents.
Despite stated demand, customer hesitation centers on security and clarity. Fraud protection ranked as the confidence-builder most respondents cited at 53 per cent, with seamless cash conversion at 51 per cent and reserve visibility at 39 per cent. Notably, 62 per cent flagged stronger regulatory clarity as critical, and 55 per cent stressed the need for education. The survey also revealed gaps in understanding: 26 per cent mistakenly believed stablecoins were government-issued, and 10 per cent expected interest-bearing features outside Hong Kong's current regulatory scope.
HSBC plans a phased rollout beginning with everyday transactions—peer-to-peer and merchant payments—before scaling to wholesale and institutional use. Concurrently, the bank will deploy an education series across banking apps, its website, and social media addressing fraud prevention and redemption mechanics. No stablecoin has been issued in Hong Kong yet; the timeline for launch remains unspecified.
