Loopring shuts down its DEX, citing outdated rollup tech and weak adoption
DeFi & Yields ·
The Ethereum zkRollup project halted trading immediately, saying user funds will be returned rather than kept on a platform it called hollow.
Loopring has stopped all trading services on its decentralized exchange effective immediately, according to CryptoPotato, which reported the project was the first to launch a zero-knowledge rollup on Ethereum. Despite that early position, the platform is winding down its DEX and AMM services and exiting the DeFi business, with a distribution plan for remaining user assets now in motion, as confirmed by The Block.
The core issue was architectural. Loopring's early zkRollup design did not include a virtual machine, which limited how composable it could be and left it unable to keep pace with newer zkEVM-based solutions that followed. Rather than continue running what the team described as a hollow service, Loopring opted to sunset the exchange outright.
User funds are said to be safe. Loopring will manage the return process directly, distributing assets via smart contract and covering transaction fees, according to CryptoPotato. Users are expected to go through a review period to verify their final account balances before distributions begin, and the project has said no action is required from users during this stage.
The announcement was corroborated across multiple outlets covering the same development, with five distinct sources describing the shutdown as driven by insufficient user adoption rather than any funds shortfall. Loopring's own announcement, posted on X, reiterated the exit from the DEX and AMM business alongside the asset return plan.
What remains unclear is the exact timeline for the review period and full fund distribution, as well as what becomes of Loopring's broader technology and team following the exit from DeFi services. It is also not yet established what, if anything, will replace the DEX within Loopring's product lineup, or whether the project intends to continue development in any other capacity.
