Prediction market volume hits record $188 billion in Q3, led by Kalshi's sports push
DeFi & Yields ·
Trading across prediction markets surged to a record $188 billion in the third quarter, with Kalshi's expansion into sports wagering driving most of the growth.
Data from CryptoRank, cited in a report, shows the $188 billion figure marks an increase of nearly 70% quarter-over-quarter and roughly 21 times the volume recorded in Q3 2025. CryptoRank attributed the bulk of the growth to Kalshi, noting that sports markets made up roughly 40% of the platform's Q3 trading volume.
The scale of the jump reflects how quickly prediction markets have moved beyond their earlier niche. A year-over-year multiple of 21 times points to a market that has expanded well past incremental growth, with sports betting emerging as a central pillar of that expansion rather than a side category.
Kalshi's growth has not been confined to sports. CryptoRank said the platform has broadened its share across several prediction-market categories during the quarter, suggesting the sports-driven volume has coincided with, rather than displaced, activity elsewhere on the platform. Polymarket, meanwhile, continues to hold a strong position in political markets, indicating the two platforms are carving out somewhat distinct strongholds even as overall volume rises across the sector. This pattern of Kalshi leading and Polymarket holding second place was corroborated separately within the same reporting cluster.
What remains unclear is how durable the sports-driven surge will prove beyond Q3, and whether Kalshi's gains in other categories will continue at a similar pace or taper as sports markets mature. Also unaddressed is how regulatory treatment of sports-related prediction contracts might evolve as volumes of this size draw wider attention. Further data in coming quarters will show whether the 70% quarter-over-quarter pace holds or whether Q3 marks a peak tied to a particular sports calendar.
