The UK Financial Conduct Authority has released regulatory guidance on cryptoassets, establishing a timeline for implementation that spans roughly a year. Authorization applications will begin accepting submissions on September 30, 2026, with the full regulatory regime becoming effective on October 25, 2027.
The guidance framework addresses five service categories: qualifying stablecoin issuance, crypto trading platforms, dealing and arranging activities, custody services, and staking services. Firms seeking to operate in these areas will be required to obtain authorization before the October 2027 deadline.
The FCA intends to consult on targeted regulatory updates in October, prompted by recent legislative changes that have created a need for adjustments to the framework. The scope and nature of these potential updates remain to be detailed in the forthcoming consultation.
