Banco Santander, Spain's largest bank, has built a $4.3 million stake in Bitcoin through BlackRock's iShares Bitcoin Trust, according to SEC filings. The Madrid-based institution acquired 129,615 shares of the spot Bitcoin ETF, marking a notable move by a major traditional financial institution into direct cryptocurrency exposure.
The purchase reflects a broader shift among institutional investors toward Bitcoin access via regulated investment vehicles. Since the SEC approved crypto ETFs in 2024, traditional money managers and banks have accelerated their participation in the space, circumventing the technical barriers of direct custody and private key management that previously deterred institutional capital. BlackRock's Bitcoin Trust has emerged as the dominant product in this category, holding $46.9 billion in assets under management and capturing substantially more inflows than competing offerings.
Santander's digital banking arm, Openbank, has been positioning itself to capture cryptocurrency adoption among its customer base, having recently begun offering Bitcoin purchasing services alongside a marketing pivot toward digital assets. Whether this corporate investment signals a broader strategic commitment to crypto integration across the bank's operations remains unclear.
