Bitcoin tops $70,000 as broad rally lifts crypto market to $2.47 trillion
Macro & Markets ·
A sharp overnight move pushed bitcoin to a two-month high above $70,000, dragging the wider digital-asset market higher by roughly $200 billion in a single day.
The rally marked one of bitcoin's strongest single-day advances of the year, with the asset's market capitalization climbing by more than $100 billion in under 24 hours, according to CryptoPotato. The move came after a period of relatively flat trading, with bitcoin's price action showing little momentum before the sudden breakout carried it through several resistance levels to its highest mark since mid-June.
Altcoins moved in tandem with the leading cryptocurrency. Ethereum climbed more than 17% to reach $2,270, a multi-month high, while other large-cap tokens including SOL, XRP, and DOGE also posted gains, according to the same report. The rally was broad enough that the combined market value of all cryptocurrencies rose by approximately $200 billion to reach $2.470 trillion.
The price surge also triggered significant activity in derivatives markets. A separate account of the move noted that bitcoin's climb past $70,000 for the first time since June 2nd forced roughly $2.7 billion in leveraged short positions to be liquidated, adding pressure to the upward move as traders who had bet against the rally were forced to close out positions.
Four distinct sources tracked the surge, pointing to widespread attention across the market as bitcoin's dominance over altcoins remained elevated even as smaller tokens rallied alongside it. Exceptions to the broader upswing were limited, with only a small number of assets failing to join the advance.
What remains unclear is what specifically triggered the sudden acceleration in buying, as the move followed days of sideways trading with no clear catalyst identified in available reporting. Whether the rally can hold above $70,000 or extend further, and whether the scale of short liquidations signals additional volatility ahead, are open questions as markets continue to digest the move.
