Bitcoin surged past $80,000, Ethereum reached $2,500, and XRP gained 9%, triggering $400M in liquidations primarily from short positions.

Bitcoin climbed above $80,000 for the first time in a week following a recovery from a low of $76,200 that had occurred during heightened Middle East tensions. Ethereum rose close to $2,500, while XRP posted a 9% daily increase. The sharp moves triggered cascading losses across leveraged positions, with more than $140 million in shorts liquidated within an hour and $400 million in total daily liquidations, predominantly from bearish bets.
The speed of the rally created acute pain for traders holding short positions. Roughly 110,000 traders faced liquidation over the previous day, with the largest single position closure reaching above $5.2 million on Binance. Shorts accounted for $315 million of the daily liquidation total, reflecting how many participants had bet on further price declines.
The reasons behind the sudden reversal remain somewhat unclear—whether stemming from technical setup shifts, broader sentiment changes, or specific market catalysts is not yet established. The extent to which these gains will hold or face resistance at higher levels also remains an open question.
