China's central bank purchased 20 tonnes of gold in August 2026, its 22nd consecutive monthly acquisition and largest single monthly addition since October 2023. Year-to-date through August, China has added 80 tonnes to official reserves, bringing total holdings to a record 2,387 tonnes or 76.73 million troy ounces. The August purchase matched the volumes acquired in July, and follows a 15-tonne addition in June, continuing a pattern of consistent monthly acquisitions that has already exceeded the entirety of 2025's 29-tonne annual increase.
