Global physical gold-backed exchange-traded funds received $30.7 billion during the third quarter of 2026, marking the largest quarterly surge in their history. September alone brought $10 billion, representing the third-strongest month for the year, while August had delivered $17.9 billion—the second-best monthly performance on record. The accumulated inflows pushed total holdings to 4,256 tonnes, exceeding the prior peak of 4,176 tonnes set in February.
Through the first nine months of 2026, these funds accumulated $38.5 billion in net inflows, equivalent to 226 tonnes of additional gold. Every geographic region participated in the demand, with no area recording outflows. UK-domiciled funds emerged as the primary driver at the country level, pulling in $9.5 billion and displacing China from its earlier lead position among individual markets.
The scale of capital flows into physical gold vehicles underscores sustained investor appetite, though whether the momentum can persist remains unclear. No information is available on the factors driving regional rotation, the underlying reasons for September's relative softness compared to August, or forward expectations for these products.
