Institutional investors are heavily long S&P 500 and global equities futures, with long positioning near record highs across US, emerging markets, and developed markets indices.

Asset managers hold approximately $375 billion in long positions across S&P 500 futures, just $20 billion below the record high from May 2026. Long bets on S&P 500 futures have increased by $160 billion, or 74 percent, since April 2025, while institutional exposure to MSCI Emerging Markets futures reached approximately $44 billion and long positioning in MSCI EAFE futures hit $39 billion, marking an all-time high for developed markets exposure outside the US and Canada.
