Long-term Bitcoin whale wallet holding 4,581 BTC since March 2020 moved its position after 4+ years of hodling through market downturns.
Macro & Markets ·
A Bitcoin wallet that accumulated 4,581.94 BTC in March 2020—when the holdings were worth approximately $40.5 million—transferred its entire stash on October 12 to five separate addresses, with the position then valued at roughly $377 million. The transfer confirmed in block 971,126 at approximately 18:37 UTC, with four of the recipient addresses receiving exactly 1,000 BTC each and the fifth taking 581.94 BTC. The transaction fee amounted to 732 satoshis, or about 60 cents, and as of October 13, none of the five receiving addresses had spent any of the transferred Bitcoin.
The wallet represents a case study in long-term holding through multiple market disruptions. Since receiving its initial deposit, the position endured the COVID-19 crash, Tesla's Bitcoin payment suspension and China's mining restrictions in May 2021, the collapses of Terra, Celsius, and FTX in 2022, and subsequent Federal Reserve rate hikes. Most recently, tariff-related market turmoil drove Bitcoin down 54 percent from its record high before recovering, yet the wallet's holders maintained their position throughout, resulting in nearly 10-fold net gains from inception.
The address has also received 22 dust deposits—trivial transfers ranging from 546 to 6,953 satoshis—between August 2020 and May 2026. One January 28, 2025 deposit exhibited characteristics of address poisoning, arriving from an address mimicking the first three and last four characters of the whale's wallet, though the holder did not fall victim to the scheme. The identity and future intentions of the wallet's controller remain unclear.
