Metaplanet adds 2,823 Bitcoin, lifts total holdings to 43,000 BTC
Macro & Markets ·
The Japanese firm's latest purchase, funded via debt, pushes its Bitcoin treasury deeper into six figures worth of quarterly growth while leaving a large gap to its 2026 target.
Metaplanet acquired an additional 2,823 BTC in the second quarter, according to a company announcement, bringing its total holdings to 43,000 BTC. The Block reported the purchase cost roughly $222 million, while CoinDesk put the figure at $221 million for the same 2,823 BTC.
The acquisition was financed through debt, a mechanism the company has used to expand its balance sheet exposure to Bitcoin. WuBlockchain noted the purchase generated a 6.6% quarterly yield for the quarter, a metric the company tracks to measure the efficiency of its accumulation strategy relative to shares outstanding.
Despite the addition, Metaplanet remains well short of its stated accumulation goal. CryptoPotato reported the company still needs 57,000 BTC to reach its 2026 target, underscoring the scale of purchases still required in coming quarters if the timeline holds.
The move reinforces Metaplanet's position as Japan's largest publicly listed Bitcoin treasury company, a status corroborated across multiple reports on the Q2 purchase. Six distinct sources have covered the acquisition, consistent on the 2,823 BTC figure and the resulting 43,000 BTC total, though cost estimates vary slightly between outlets.
What remains unclear is how Metaplanet plans to close the 57,000 BTC gap to its 2026 target, whether future purchases will continue to rely on debt financing, and how the 6.6% quarterly yield metric will trend as the accumulation pace continues. The company has not detailed its financing plans for subsequent quarters.
