MicroStrategy and Grayscale Investments acquired 197,000 BTC year-to-date, representing over 100% of net institutional Bitcoin purchases.

Institutional bitcoin accumulation concentrated sharply in 2026, with just two companies driving the majority of corporate purchases. MicroStrategy and Strive added 197,000 BTC year-to-date, accounting for over 100 percent of net business purchases—a metric reflecting that other corporate holders sold more than they bought. MicroStrategy alone held 848,000 BTC as of October, more than half of all business bitcoin holdings totaling 1.64 million BTC.
The concentration reflects a significant slowdown in corporate adoption momentum. Business inflows fell roughly two-thirds compared to the same period in 2025, driven by fading enthusiasm around Bitcoin Treasury Companies and a strategic pivot by large miners toward AI infrastructure spending. The number of such treasury companies declined during 2026 following a sixfold increase the prior year. Meanwhile, the total supply held by businesses reached 7.8 percent of all bitcoin in existence.
Adoption patterns among smaller private firms diverged from the headline slowdown. River's 4,000-plus business clients, drawn primarily from real estate, services, and hospitality, reported maintaining bitcoin purchases despite market conditions, allocating an average of 20 percent of net income to the asset. What remains unclear is whether the extreme concentration among two major holders signals market maturation or represents a temporary phenomenon, and whether smaller corporate adoption can sustain without renewed large-buyer momentum.
