Monero drops 10% after researcher who discovered a critical Zcash bug announces Monero audit, fueling vulnerability concerns.
Macro & Markets ·
Security engineer Taylor Hornby, who recently discovered a critical flaw in Zcash's Orchard privacy pool using an AI model, announced plans to audit Monero alongside other privacy-focused cryptocurrencies. The disclosure prompted a 10% decline in Monero's price as traders weighed potential vulnerability risks in the privacy coin.
Hornby's Zcash discovery, made on May 29, exposed a bug that had remained hidden since May 2022 in the blockchain's Orchard privacy pool and could have enabled unlimited counterfeit token minting. That vulnerability triggered a 38% drop in Zcash over 24 hours following disclosure and emergency remediation by June 1. Hornby was hired by nonprofit developer Shielded Labs in April to identify protocol flaws before attackers could exploit them and chose to disclose rather than exploit the flaw.
The expansion of Hornby's audit scope to Monero and other privacy coins reflects broader concerns that similar dormant vulnerabilities may exist across cryptocurrency protocols. It remains unclear whether Hornby's upcoming Monero audit will uncover any material flaws, what timeline he intends for the work, or how market sentiment may shift depending on audit findings.
