Real-world asset trading on crypto exchanges has scaled to nearly $1 trillion in volume through 2026, encompassing commodities like gold, silver, and oil alongside equities. CoinDesk Research data shows Binance capturing 60.9% of centralized exchange RWA volume year-to-date, with approximately $450 billion in RWA perpetuals representing 59.4% of that market segment.
The expansion extends well beyond spot and derivatives trading. Binance operates over 316 million user accounts, maintains roughly $145 billion in user assets under custody, has processed more than $280 billion through its payment product, and distributed around $1.2 billion in yield rewards during 2022. These figures illustrate how exchanges have migrated from their original function as cryptocurrency trading platforms to handling traditional asset settlement, payments infrastructure, and savings products for hundreds of millions of users simultaneously.
The shift signals a fundamental repositioning of exchange business models away from pure trading venues toward full-stack financial platforms. Whether this consolidation strengthens or fragments the competitive landscape—and which platforms sustain dominance—remains subject to regulatory developments and user retention dynamics.
