RWA tokenization is positioned as crypto's next major liquidity channel, with $16B in 12-month inflows and collateralization emerging as the critical catalyst to connect TradFi assets to DeFi.

Real-world asset tokenization attracted approximately $16 billion in inflows over the past twelve months, with the underlying tokenized value reaching the low-$30 billions and growing roughly threefold year-over-year. Despite this expansion, RWA currently represents 0.9% of crypto market cap in trailing twelve-month inflows, and the sector remains relatively nascent at around eighteen months old. The majority of RWA capital is still concentrated in traditional instruments—Treasuries, money-market funds, and cash-management products—rather than actively deployed in decentralized finance.
The critical transition underway involves shifting RWA from a tokenization story to one centered on collateralization. As tokenized assets become usable as productive collateral across decentralized finance platforms and major trading venues, they stand to function as a liquidity bridge connecting traditional finance balance sheets with crypto markets. This transformation would unlock the passive capital currently trapped in stable, low-yield vehicles and redirect it toward active participation in on-chain financial infrastructure.
The path forward depends on whether tokenized assets can integrate seamlessly into existing DeFi collateral frameworks and gain acceptance across major market participants. The infrastructure and regulatory clarity needed to enable this cross-chain collateral migration remain incompletely established.
