Six Bitcoin wallets dormant for over a decade moved $40M in BTC within one week.

Six Bitcoin wallets dormant for over a decade collectively moved approximately $40 million in BTC between August 16 and 26, according to Galaxy Research tracking. The wallets had remained inactive since 2011, 2012, and 2014, with the combined transfer totaling 553.59 BTC. Two of the six wallets carried labels linking them to Noah Doe, a pseudonymous plaintiff in a New York lawsuit seeking to claim tens of thousands of dormant Bitcoin addresses as abandoned property.
The awakening of these ancient addresses highlights the extreme volatility in Bitcoin's value over the past 13 to 15 years. Coins acquired in mid-2011 for roughly $10 to $14 each were worth hundreds of thousands of dollars at the time of movement, representing gains exceeding 800,000% in some cases. One wallet, dormant since June 2011, held just 8.54 BTC worth $538,000 when finally moved—a 461,981% return on its original $14 cost basis.
The reasons for these wallets' sudden activation remain unclear. Most transfers showed no identifiable sender attribution, meaning the original holders' identities and motivations—whether lost keys were recovered, old hardware drives discovered, or wallets recently accessed—are currently unknown. The sixth wallet's movement to Boerse Stuttgart Digital, a German crypto custody bank, represents one of few movements with a documented destination.
