Strategy posts $19.53 billion Q3 net income on digital asset gains

The bitcoin-holding company's quarterly profit jumped sharply year over year as accounting gains on its crypto reserves swelled, even as it trimmed part of its holdings to cover dividend and buyback obligations.
Strategy's net income for the third quarter of 2026 came in at $19.53 billion, a steep rise from $2.79 billion in the same period a year prior, according to a report from WuBlockchain. The bulk of that figure stemmed from $20.91 billion in unrealized or realized gains tied to the firm's digital asset portfolio, reflecting the scale of its bitcoin exposure on the balance sheet.
Alongside the earnings disclosure, the company revealed it had offloaded roughly $431.8 million worth of bitcoin so far this year. That sale was earmarked to help cover a portion of payments owed on its preferred stock dividends and to fund repurchases of STRC shares, suggesting the company is managing cash obligations around its equity structure even while continuing to accumulate coins overall.
Despite that partial sale, Strategy's bitcoin stockpile kept growing. As of October 25, the firm held 848,517 BTC, a 26% increase since the start of the year. That expansion came after $14.33 billion in bitcoin purchases made during 2026, underscoring that acquisitions far outpaced the modest divestment used for dividend and buyback funding.
The earnings update also coincided with a leadership change at the top of the finance function. CFO Andrew Kang is set to step down on November 5, with Reza Virasteh named as his successor effective January 1, 2027, leaving a roughly two-month gap before the transition formally takes effect.
What remains unclear is how the incoming CFO's approach might affect the balance between bitcoin accumulation and the funding mechanisms used for shareholder obligations, as well as whether further sales similar to the $431.8 million disposed of this year will be needed to sustain dividend and repurchase commitments going forward.
