The number of Americans outside the labor force reached 105.8 million in June, up 832,000 from the prior month and marking an all-time high. This total exceeds the 2020 pandemic peak by 2.2 million people, with 2.5 million having exited the workforce so far this year. As a percentage of the population aged 16 and older, those not in the labor force stand at 38.5%, the highest level since the 1970s excluding the pandemic period.
