Binance pledges to cover a $6.3B hack using its SAFU fund, but no legal obligation exists and US regulators provide no crypto loss guarantees.

Binance has pledged to cover losses from a $6.3 billion hack using its own funds and a $1 billion SAFU reserve, though no legal obligation compels the exchange to do so. The New York Times reported that unlike traditional financial institutions, crypto platforms operate without US federal guarantees for customer losses, leaving users dependent on individual company commitments.
The SAFU fund, maintained separately from Binance's operational reserves, represents the exchange's stated mechanism for absorbing losses during security breaches. However, the absence of regulatory insurance or statutory recovery requirements means Binance retains full discretion over whether and how fully to reimburse affected users.
It remains unclear whether the pledged amount will prove sufficient, how the compensation process will be administered, or whether regulators will impose additional requirements on the exchange as a condition of restoring operations or maintaining its market position.
