Coinbase is designing adaptive post-quantum custody infrastructure for Bitcoin to prepare for future cryptographic standards.

Coinbase is designing adaptive custody infrastructure to safeguard roughly $250 billion in assets through whatever post-quantum cryptographic standards Bitcoin ultimately adopts, according to the exchange's head of cryptography. The challenge centers on post-quantum signature schemes that may not be compatible with Multi-Party Computation, the traditional method Coinbase uses to split private keys across multiple parties without exposing them in one location. The company is exploring a fallback architecture combining post-quantum threshold decryption with programmable Hardware Security Modules to prepare for scenarios where Bitcoin's chosen signature scheme cannot work with conventional MPC approaches.
