Institutional Bitcoin and Ether ETF inflows surge while regulatory pressure mounts; Balancer proposes shutdown, CoinEx shuts down, and Zama expands confidential trading on Ethereum.

CoinEx announced it will cease operations following nearly nine years of activity, attributing the decision to sustained market weakness, declining volumes and liquidity, and mounting regulatory compliance expenses across jurisdictions. The shutdown proceeds in stages: new account registrations and futures trading to reduce-only began September 15, non-spot services including staking and lending end September 22, spot trading halts September 29, and full platform closure occurs December 22. Founded in December 2017, the exchange operates independently from ViaBTC, a major Bitcoin mining pool that will continue normally. CoinEx stated its reserve ratio stands above 100%, ensuring all customer holdings remain fully protected and withdrawable throughout the wind-down.
Separately, activity in institutional Bitcoin and Ether products accelerated, with spot Bitcoin ETFs recording $160 million in inflows on September 14 while Ether funds added $121 million. In the broader regulatory environment, eighteen state attorneys general voiced opposition to the CLARITY Act before an upcoming Senate vote. Meanwhile, Balancer initiated a proposal to wind down the protocol and return its treasury to BAL token holders, and Zama expanded its confidential trading infrastructure on Ethereum following its first vault reaching $40 million. A separate incident saw Revolut disclose that hackers obtained information on 680 customers following fraudulent government requests, while the UAE progressed its digital identity system serving 12.5 million users to the Avalanche blockchain.
The cluster reflects simultaneous institutional momentum in spot crypto assets alongside mounting pressures—regulatory scrutiny, compliance burdens, and security challenges—that are reshaping infrastructure and exchange landscapes. Whether CoinEx's closure signals broader consolidation or reflects isolated circumstances remains uncertain.
