Fed rate decision and Senate crypto vote set for same week
Regulation & Gov ·
Markets are pricing a high probability of a 25 basis point Federal Reserve hike on Wednesday, hours after a Senate cloture vote on the CLARITY Act that could reshape US crypto oversight.
Traders are treating the next five business days as a pivotal stretch for bitcoin, with two events seen as most likely to move prices: a 20-year securities auction and August retail sales data are on the calendar, but the September interest rate decision and the Senate's procedural vote on crypto market structure legislation are drawing the most attention, according to CryptoPotato. Current market pricing assigns an 85%-90% probability that the Federal Reserve will raise rates by 25 basis points on Wednesday.
The case for tighter policy has strengthened over recent weeks. August employment data showed the US economy added 162,000 jobs, triple what had been expected, while producer inflation accelerated to an annual 5.4%. A subsequent CPI report confirmed headline inflation at 3.4%, with core monthly inflation running slightly hotter than forecast. Oil prices above $100 and a record diesel price have added further pressure on the central bank to act.
Bitcoin has already shown sensitivity to the shifting rate outlook, falling sharply after Fed Chair Kevin Warsh's remarks at Jackson Hole several weeks ago and again as hike odds climbed following the latest data. The asset has slid from $82,400 to under $78,000, leaving open the question of whether a hike is already priced in. Investors are expected to watch Warsh's post-meeting press conference closely for signals on whether Wednesday's move is a single adjustment or the start of a broader tightening cycle.
Ahead of the Fed decision, the Senate is scheduled to hold a cloture vote on the CLARITY Act at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, requiring 60 senators to advance debate on the bill. The legislation is designed to establish a comprehensive US crypto market structure and clarify the respective roles of the SEC and CFTC. Republicans released updated text last week adding provisions for non-decentralized DeFi protocols and rules for how credit unions can handle crypto, and published what they called a "last, best, and final" draft on Sunday that includes an ethics proposal backed by the president.
Two separate accounts of the week's calendar corroborate that both the CLARITY Act cloture vote on September 15 and the FOMC meeting on September 16 are expected to drive volatility across crypto markets. What remains unresolved is whether the cloture vote secures the 60 votes needed to advance and whether Wednesday's rate decision marks an isolated move or signals further hikes ahead.
