Standard Chartered becomes first Global Systemically Important Bank to offer institutional Bitcoin and Ether spot trading in the UAE.
Regulation & Gov ·
Standard Chartered marked a milestone by becoming the first globally systemically important bank to roll out deliverable spot trading for Bitcoin and Ether to institutional clients in the UAE, with the service going live on September 3. The trading capability integrates with the bank's existing digital asset custody infrastructure, enabling clients to complete transactions via their preferred custodians, including Standard Chartered's own digital asset custody offering.
The move slots into a wider push by Standard Chartered across digital assets, encompassing trading, custody, and tokenization operations. The service runs under the DFSA-regulated DIFC arm of the bank, anchored by the UAE's clear regulatory environment. The launch also builds on existing offerings the bank has deployed in digital asset custody and stablecoin services.
Questions remain on adoption rates among institutional clients, the full scope of trading pairs or order volumes supported, and whether other systemically important banks will follow with similar UAE-based offerings.
