Switzerland's FINMA approves Europe's first spot Bitcoin ETF (BBIT), launching on SIX Swiss Exchange in November.
Regulation & Gov ·
Switzerland's financial regulator FINMA has approved a spot Bitcoin ETF, marking Europe's first such product. BIT Asset Management AG received authorization to list the BBIT ETF on the SIX Swiss Exchange, with trading expected to commence in November. The approval enables Swiss retail and institutional investors to gain direct exposure to spot Bitcoin through traditional bank accounts using a regulated vehicle.
The launch expands the European infrastructure for Bitcoin investment and creates a compliant channel for non-U.S. demand. Until now, European investors seeking spot Bitcoin ETF access have had limited domestic options, making this approval significant for the regional asset-management ecosystem. The timing positions Switzerland as an early adopter of retail-focused spot Bitcoin products in Europe.
Several mechanics remain to be clarified as November approaches, including the specific trading date, fund structure details, and fee levels. The extent to which traditional Swiss financial institutions will actively market the product to their clients—and the resulting inflow volumes—also remains to be seen once the ETF becomes tradeable.
