WSJ reports $5B in nearly identical Kalshi trades drawing regulatory scrutiny.
Regulation & Gov ·
Nearly one million trades executed on prediction market Kalshi since August have drawn scrutiny from federal regulators, according to Wall Street Journal reporting. Analysis of public trading data revealed that more than one-third of recent trades in a market speculating on ethereum's price consisted of rapid orders clustered around an identical size of $5,500 each. The aggregate value of these nearly identical trades reached approximately $5 billion.
The Commodity Futures Trading Commission, Kalshi's federal regulator, is examining the trading pattern, according to a person familiar with the matter. Kalshi's public data does not identify individual traders, leaving the source of the coordinated activity unclear. The prediction market has characterized the trades as representing normal market activity.
What remains unresolved is whether regulators will determine the pattern constitutes market manipulation or whether traders will face enforcement action. Kalshi's defense that the trades are routine suggests potential disagreement exists between the platform and oversight authorities over what the data actually indicates about market integrity.
