Tokenization compresses financial workflows by embedding asset ownership and transfer directly into code, allowing trades, ownership transfers, and payments to execute simultaneously on shared ledgers rather than through sequential steps spanning days. This acceleration eliminates the delays and procedural friction that have characterized digital payments, securities, and derivatives for decades.
The removal of these frictions, however, strips away safeguards that historically absorbed shocks. Traditional systems allow time for human or institutional intervention during stress or error; tokenized systems execute collateral calls and settlement demands in real time, with failures capable of propagating faster than supervisors can respond. According to analysis, risk that previously resided on individual institution balance sheets increasingly concentrates in the platforms and smart contracts governing these transactions.
The structural change raises open questions about stability under stress. It remains unclear how a financial system built around real-time execution, automated liquidations, and concentrated platform risk will behave during systemic shocks—particularly as multiple forms of digital money (bank deposits, stablecoins, central bank money) coexist and interact within tokenized infrastructure.
