BNY and Citadel Securities completed the first Treasury repo transaction using tokenized assets on a major triparty platform, settling in minutes.
RWA & Tokenization ·
BNY and Citadel Securities have executed a Treasury repo transaction using tokenized assets on a major triparty platform, marking the first such use of this settlement method. A tokenized 2-year U.S. Treasury was settled within minutes on BNY's private ledger before serving as collateral in an overnight repo agreement with Citadel Securities.
The transaction demonstrates how tokenized fixed-income instruments can move through traditional finance infrastructure. By converting Treasury debt into digital form on a private blockchain, the two parties reduced settlement time from the standard multi-day window to minutes, while maintaining compatibility with existing triparty repo frameworks. The speed improvement stems from eliminating intermediary processing delays inherent in conventional settlement.
The significance lies in whether this model scales beyond a single trial. No timeline for broader adoption has been disclosed, and it remains unclear whether other institutions will integrate similar tokenized-asset workflows or if regulatory frameworks will expand to accommodate wider use. The transaction does confirm that legacy financial plumbing can accommodate digitized securities when both counterparties are equipped to participate.
