Cboe renews S&P 500 index options license through 2051 while enabling tokenization of options on blockchain infrastructure.

Cboe Global Markets and S&P Dow Jones Indices have extended their exclusive licensing partnership through 2051, maintaining Cboe's rights to offer S&P 500 Index options while exploring collaboration on blockchain-based derivatives. The companies flagged tokenized options contracts as a potential area of joint development, though any such product remains speculative rather than imminent. SPX options, the underlying market for this licensing arrangement, recorded 970.6 million contracts traded in 2025, and Cboe's stock price climbed more than 6% following the announcement.
The tokenization exploration reflects a broader institutional pivot toward issuing traditional financial instruments on blockchain networks. Recent moves by the New York Stock Exchange, BlackRock, and consortiums spanning major investment banks have signaled momentum in this direction, accelerated partly by the SEC's new "innovation exemption" pathway for tokenized equities to trade without full exchange registration.
A key structural question remains unresolved: how tokenized options would manage the operational complexity inherent to derivatives—expiration dates, strike prices, and settlement logic—in an on-chain environment. Cboe and S&P DJI have articulated their intent to explore joint development, but no committed timeline or technical specifications have been disclosed.
