RWA adoption is shifting focus from token issuance to custody infrastructure and trust architecture, with institutional players like BlackRock, Ondo, and Centrifuge leading the integration of qualified custody, key management, and asset segregation frameworks.
RWA & Tokenization ·
The development of real-world asset tokenization is increasingly defined not by the ability to issue tokens but by the infrastructure supporting custody, settlement, and legal claim verification. Ondo Finance demonstrates this shift through products like USDY and OUSG, where institutional access and transfer controls matter as much as the tokenized products themselves. BlackRock's BUIDL fund similarly illustrates the institutional model, employing BNY Mellon as custodian and administrator alongside transfer agent Securitize, with multiple key management providers including Anchorage, BitGo, Coinbase, and Fireblocks in its ecosystem.
The market is now differentiating between serious RWA infrastructure and surface-level tokenization by examining three custody layers: key management systems that control asset movement through tools like multi-party computation and policy engines; asset segregation approaches that balance verification simplicity against operational efficiency; and collateral-settlement arrangements that reduce deposit risk by maintaining assets with qualified custodians while enabling programmatic trading access. Centrifuge's qualified custody initiative with Kraken Institutional for tokenized JAAA and Maple Finance's emphasis on overcollateralized, custody-held institutional lending demonstrate institutional preference for RWAs operating within compliant custody frameworks.
What remains unclear is whether custody and settlement infrastructure providers will emerge as primary beneficiaries relative to RWA issuance platforms themselves, or how regulatory frameworks will evolve to standardize segregation and settlement procedures across jurisdictions.
