RWA perpetuals market grew from $6.5B to $262B weekly volume over ten months, driven by rotating themes (precious metals, oil, equities, commodities) that layer volume rather than replace it.
RWA & Tokenization ·
Real-world asset perpetuals volume has grown sharply over ten months, reaching $262.0B in weekly volume by late July, with successive trading themes rotating through the market. Silver dominated trading in January, followed by oil in March and SpaceX and memory chips by June, with leadership shifting roughly every two months across six distinct themes. Weekly volume expanded from $6.5B at the start of this period.
A notable pattern has emerged in how these rotations unfold. When precious metals—which once represented 83% of RWA perp volume—ceded market leadership, they did not disappear entirely; the category still cleared roughly $86B in July despite dropping to 12% of total activity. This suggests new themes attract fresh participants and liquidity rather than simply redirecting existing volume from one trade to another.
The cumulative effect of this layering mechanism appears substantial. Monthly volume climbed from roughly $15B during the gold-led phase to approximately $800B once memory-chip trading took hold. Whether this growth remains sustainable as themes continue to cycle, and whether smaller or abandoned themes retain durable participation, remain open questions.
