UK government appoints six banks to lead first digitally native government bond with DLT pilot scheduled for Q1 2027.

The UK government has appointed six banks to lead development of its first digitally native government bond, with a distributed ledger technology pilot scheduled for Q1 2027. This initiative represents an expansion of tokenized debt instruments across institutional finance, joining parallel efforts in Japan, Korea, and the EU to settle and trade government obligations on blockchain infrastructure.
The pilot will test whether DLT can enable faster settlement, reduced intermediaries, and real-time collateral functionality for sovereign debt—capabilities that conventional bond markets currently lack. Government bonds serve as the risk-free benchmark against which all other assets, including crypto and decentralized finance yields, are priced. Integrating them onto distributed networks could reshape how institutional capital allocates between traditional and blockchain-native instruments.
What remains unclear is the scope of the pilot—how many bonds will be issued, what volume will trade on DLT rails versus conventional systems, and whether the test will include settlement across multiple networks or remain confined to a single infrastructure. The timeline and any subsequent rollout to wider issuance also depend on pilot outcomes.
