Aave freezes lending markets after $200M stolen from Binance hackers attempt to borrow against stolen funds.
Security & Exploits ·
Aave froze lending markets to block borrowing activity tied to a suspected breach. Approximately $200M in funds were transferred out, reportedly stolen from Binance hackers who were attempting to use the assets as collateral within Aave's lending protocol.
The freeze represents a protective measure to interrupt an attack chain in which stolen assets would be deployed to generate additional value through lending protocols. By restricting market access, Aave blocked the next phase of the exploit, preventing attackers from leveraging the compromised funds to borrow stablecoins or other assets.
The scope of the original theft, the identity of the hackers, and the full extent of Binance's losses remain unclear. It is also not yet established whether the freeze will be permanent or temporary, or what additional measures Aave and Binance are coordinating to contain the incident.
