Binance hack pushes 2026 crypto losses to record $8.7 billion
Security & Exploits ·
A single breach at Binance now accounts for nearly three-quarters of all crypto stolen so far this year, making 2026 the worst year on record for exploits.
Binance disclosed a hack totaling roughly $6.36 billion, a figure that by itself represents 73% of the $8.7 billion lost to crypto hacks across 322 attacks so far in 2026. That annual total is already more than double the previous record of $4.0 billion set in 2020, and without today's incident the year's losses would stand at about $2.4 billion, roughly in line with recent years.
The exchange said the breach originated from a compromised laptop, but its security team has since identified additional breach points beyond that initial entry, according to a statement posted by Binance. The company said deposits remain operational and withdrawals are expected to resume within 45 to 48 hours, with an executive, Yi He, separately indicating a similar timeline for restoring withdrawal functionality.
Analysts tracking the stolen funds have attributed much of this year's spike to human error — leaked private keys in particular — rather than more sophisticated tooling, despite speculation that advanced AI played a role in some attacks. Arkham Intelligence is now monitoring the entity behind the Binance hack, with Arkham's tracking showing roughly 5.7 billion in funds under watch tied to the attacker.
The scale of the breach has reset the baseline for annual hack totals less than a year after the prior record was set in 2020, underscoring how a single incident can dominate yearly loss figures. It remains unclear how much of the $6.36 billion Binance will be able to recover or freeze, and the exact mechanism behind the "additional breach points" beyond the initial laptop compromise has not been detailed.
What happens to the roughly 5.7 billion in monitored funds, whether withdrawals resume on the stated 45-to-48-hour timeline, and whether further breach points are disclosed are the immediate points to watch as the incident continues to unfold.
