Boltz, a non-custodial Bitcoin swap service enabling transfers between the Lightning Network and the base blockchain layer, has suspended its swap operations indefinitely. The company attributed the shutdown to accelerating AI-assisted attacks that outpace its team's ability to identify and deploy fixes. In X posts on Monday, Boltz stated swaps would remain disabled "until further notice" without providing a timeline for restoration, noting it cannot responsibly re-enable the service while under active targeting by multiple groups.
Boltz characterized the situation not as a response to a single breach but as part of a sustained pattern. Over recent months, the company detected automated, AI-driven probing of its infrastructure and contained several exploits, but concluded attackers now iterate faster than a team of its size can respond. The company holds approximately $262,000 in total value locked and emphasized that no user funds faced risk due to its non-custodial design, in which users retain control of assets throughout transactions.
The shutdown reflects broader concerns within cryptocurrency infrastructure as AI accelerates both attack and defense capabilities. Boltz framed the suspension as highlighting a major paradigm shift for Bitcoin services built on open-source stacks, cautioning against expecting rapid service resumption. The API remains available for cooperative refunds, unilateral refunds continue to function independently, and customer support persists.
