Drift Protocol exploiter moves $109M in ETH to Tornado Cash over two days, likely attempting to obscure the stolen funds.
Security & Exploits ·
The Drift Protocol exploiter transferred approximately 44,510 ETH—valued at roughly $109 million—to Tornado Cash across two separate transactions on October 20 and 21. On the first day, 25,710 ETH (approximately $63 million) moved to the mixing service, followed by 18,800 ETH (roughly $46 million) the next day. Two blockchain addresses were identified as conducting these transfers: 0xAa843eD65C1f061F111B5289169731351c5e57C1 and 0xD3FEEd5DA83D8e8c449d6CB96ff1eb06ED1cF6C7.
The sequence of transactions points toward an effort to obscure the origin of funds taken in the Drift Protocol exploit. Tornado Cash, a decentralized mixing protocol, has historically served as a common destination for stolen cryptocurrency, breaking the on-chain trail that would otherwise link illicit transfers to their source. The deliberate two-day staging of the transfers may indicate an attempt to avoid detection thresholds or slip through monitoring gaps.
It remains unclear whether law enforcement, blockchain analysts, or the Drift Protocol team have identified additional wallet movements or whether the transferred funds have begun entering centralized exchanges or other downstream services where further tracing or recovery might be possible.
