Trader alleges Hyperliquid quote manipulation hit Papertrade pricing

An X account's claim that two addresses nudged Hyperliquid's ETH quotes to inflate paper positions is drawing scrutiny, though nothing has been confirmed.
According to a post flagged on wublockchain.xyz, a user going by Boblob claims a pair of wallets placed orders worth roughly $20 million on Hyperliquid, shifting ETH's best bid and offer by 10 to 20 basis points. The same wallets, the claim states, were simultaneously sitting on far larger long positions over on Papertrade, a perpetuals venue built on HyperEVM.
The mechanism at issue is Papertrade's pricing method: it reportedly settles trades using the midpoint between Hyperliquid's top bid and top offer. If that midpoint can be nudged with comparatively modest capital relative to the exposure riding on it, a trader holding an oversized position elsewhere could theoretically profit by briefly skewing the reference price. A small quote shift on a large, liquid order book translating into a larger payout on a thinner derivative market is the core of the alleged exploit.
This isn't being framed as a surprise vulnerability. Separately, trader Rune pointed out that Papertrade's own documentation already lists best-bid-offer manipulation as a known, unresolved protocol risk โ suggesting the team was aware such an attack vector could exist even if it hadn't materialized. A related post, shared via x.com, frames the episode as evidence of a design flaw that let outside trades on Hyperliquid artificially inflate long positions booked on Papertrade.
Two sources are now covering the allegations, but key facts remain unverified. Papertrade has not confirmed any losses, and no independent audit of the wallets or trade flow has been presented publicly. It is also not established whether the $20 million in orders was coordinated as a single strategy or represents separate activity being read together after the fact.
What remains open is whether Papertrade will acknowledge the incident, adjust its pricing mechanism to dampen sensitivity to short-term BBO swings, or dispute the allegation altogether. Until the platform responds or the wallets in question are independently traced, the claims stand as an allegation rather than a confirmed exploit.
