Abstract L2 to wind down by December 15 after multimillion-dollar losses

The Pudgy Penguins-backed Ethereum layer-2 network is shutting down after nearly three years of operation, with parent company Igloo citing unsustainable losses.
Abstract will cease operations on December 15, and users have until that date to bridge their assets off the network, according to The Block. Igloo lost tens of millions of dollars over roughly two years running the chain, a figure confirmed by CEO Luca Netz, who said the company considered and rejected launching a token to keep the network afloat.
The decision follows an internal assessment that a consumer-focused chain built around Abstract's model was not financially viable. Contributing factors included thin liquidity on the network and limited uptake from institutional users, according to Decrypt. Rather than attempt a pivot or seek fresh capital through a token sale, Igloo opted to close the chain entirely and redirect its resources.
That redirection points back to the company's core franchise: Pudgy Penguins and its PENGU token. With Abstract winding down, Igloo is refocusing its operations on the NFT brand and associated token rather than continuing to subsidize a separate layer-2 infrastructure business, a shift also reported by wublockchain.xyz.
The shutdown has been corroborated across multiple outlets, with at least seven distinct sources covering the closure, underscoring that Abstract's exit is being treated as a notable retreat from the layer-2 sector rather than a routine product sunset. The network's own channels have also pointed users toward the bridging requirement ahead of the December deadline, as reflected in a post from Abstract's X account.
What remains unclear is the precise breakdown of where the tens of millions in losses accumulated, whether any applications or liquidity providers built on Abstract have alternative migration paths beyond bridging, and what becomes of any remaining Abstract-specific infrastructure or partnerships once the chain goes offline. Also unresolved is whether Igloo's narrower focus on Pudgy Penguins and PENGU will involve further asset transfers, compensation for affected users, or additional details on how the two-year loss figure was calculated.
